Political relations

A bilateral Treaty of Friendship, Understanding and Cooperation was signed in June 1994 following the independence of Kyrgyzstan, with which France established diplomatic relations in February 1992. Since 2001, our bilateral relations have intensified through the hosting of a French air detachment in Bishkek to support French military operations in Afghanistan. A diplomatic office was opened in Bishkek in summer 2004, which was converted into a full embassy at the end of 2009 (the first resident ambassador took office in July 2010), and into a diplomatic presence post in 2015.

France and Kyrgyzstan enjoy good relations, and bilateral political consultations take place annually. The bilateral meeting on 10 November 2023 between the President of the French Republic and his Kyrgyz counterpart Sadyr Japarov was an important step (third meeting between the Heads of State of the two countries after the visits to Paris of President Akayev in 2003 and President Atambayev in 2015) and took place alongside a Kyrgyz-French Business Forum.

In September 2020, Kyrgyzstan opened an embassy in Paris, demonstrating the importance it places on the bilateral relationship with France.

Economic relations

Trade between France and Kyrgyzstan is limited. After peaking at €188 million in 2023, French exports in 2024 were €100 million, mainly made up of various chemicals (€20.4 million) and products for manufacturing vehicles (€13.8 million). Imports from Kyrgyzstan are negligible, meaning that France has a trade surplus with Kyrgyzstan.
