Political relations

The French President met with his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisi, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 20 September 2022. The two also spoke by telephone on 9 August 2021, 29 January and 23 July 2022 and 10 June 2023. Iran was invited to the two “Baghdad format” summits, on 27 August 2021 in Baghdad and on 20 December 2022 in Jordan (where Iran was represented by its Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian). The French Foreign Minister met his Iranian counterpart in Beijing on 06 April 2023. The two ministers spoke by telephone on 11 October 2022 and on 25 January and 12 May 2023.

Several French nationals are currently being arbitrarily detained in Iran.

Economic relations

Total trade in goods between our two countries stood at €367 million at the end of 2022, including €313.2 million in French exports to Iran (up 39.6% on the previous year) and €54.5 million in French imports from the country (up 15.9%), giving a French surplus of €259.7 million (French customs data). Since the US withdrawal from the Vienna Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, bilateral trade has diminished.
