Political relations

It was under the chairmanship of the Federated States of Micronesia that New Caledonia and French Polynesia were admitted in 2016 as fully-fledged members of the Pacific Islands Forum, a membership which had been requested almost a decade earlier. The support of the former FSM President, Peter Christian, was key as he was personally involved in conducting debates to request a decision on the issue.

The 2015 Paris Climate Conference brought new visibility. Peter Christian commended France’s leadership and advocated the effective production of an ambitious regional strategy for the implementation of the commitments made at COP21.

French expertise is acknowledged and appreciated in the Micronesia. In the past, France was asked to support the inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List of the megalithic site of Nan Madol, as well as the creation of the future national museum, in liaison with the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in New Caledonia.

The French Embassy in the Manila (Philippines) is competent for Micronesia.

Economic relations

Economic relations between Micronesia and France are very limited, apart from some occasional flows.
