French presence

France’s presence in Micronesia is minimal.

Visits

The President of the Federated States of Micronesia, Wesley Simina, attended the third United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development (UNOC3) and the sixth Pacific-France Summit, both held in Nice in June 2025, on which occasion he had a bilateral meeting with the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

Peter Christian also attended the high-level dialogue on climate change organized in Nouméa by the Pacific Community in May 2018, in the presence of Emmanuel Macron.

During her visit to Vanuatu to attend the Pacific Community Ministerial Conference in November 2022, the Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, met with the Aren Palik, Vice-President of Micronesia.

Cultural, scientific and technical cooperation

France’s cooperation with the Federated States of Micronesia is conducted within the Kiwa Initiative, a climate and environment cooperation programme implemented by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD, French Development Agency) and jointly funded by France, the EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The MiCOAST project (sustainable fishing and aquaculture) and the Women’s Work project (training of 500 women to restore coastal ecosystems) provide Micronesia, along with the Marshall Islands, Palau and Nauru, with a budget of €10.5 million.
