Political relations

Relations between France and the Republic of Kiribati, established in 1982, are relatively modest but have strengthened within the context of climate negotiations.

The President of the Republic of Kiribati, Taneti Maamau, took part in the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) and sixth Pacific-France Summit held in Nice in June 2025. He delivered a speech on sustainable ocean management on behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum.

Relations are also growing with New Caledonia and French Polynesia: in January 2017, the Vice President of Kiribati at the time, Kourabi Nenem, travelled to Nouméa in January 2017, and President Maamau visited Papeete in February 2017, where he was received by the Vice President of French Polynesia.

The French Embassy in Suva is competent for Kiribati.

Economic relations

No French companies have invested in the country, and FDI stocks and flows are almost at zero. Trade relations are practically non-existent, aside from occasional transactions.
