French presence

There are some 200 French nationals living in Bangladesh and 12,000 Bangladeshis in France.

Each country maintains an embassy in the other, but no fully-fledged consulates.

Visits

• September 2023: Visit to Bangladesh by the President of the French Republic
• November 2021: Visit to Paris by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who met with the President of the French Republic
• March 2020: Visit to Dhaka by the Minister for the Armed Forces, Florence Parly, who met with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister
• December 2017: Visit to Paris by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for the One Planet Summit, and meeting with the President of the French Republic
• October 2019: Visit to France by the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister, who met with the Minister of State in charge of foreign trade (as part of a Bangladeshi trade mission)

Cultural, scientific and technical cooperation

Based on the 1987 cultural cooperation agreement, France’s outreach policy in Bangladesh prioritizes the promotion of culture and economic attractiveness and the development of scientific and technical cooperation in the areas of the blue economy and climate change. From a cultural standpoint (cooperation with art galleries, a project for a modern art gallery, a French school under contract with the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE), the Embassy liaises with the two Alliance Française branches in Dhaka and Chittagong, each of which has a Campus France office to promote the French university system. Scientific and technical cooperation is based on study grants, financing for traineeships and support for expert assignments in a variety of fields (health, oceanography, seismology, hydrography, archaeology and space).French presence
