Political relations

Connected through a shared language and history and neighbours thanks to the French territories in the Americas, Haiti and France have close ties of friendship and solidarity. While our trade relations have traditionally been limited, political relations have been marked by President François Hollande’s visit to Port-au-Prince on 12 May 2015 and President Jovenel Moïse’s visit to Paris on 11 and 12 December 2017. On 27 April 2023, President Emmanuel Macron visited the Fort de Joux to mark the 175th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in France and the 220th of the death of the Franco-Haitian general Toussaint Louverture. In January 2025, he received Leslie Voltaire, chairman in office of the Presidential Transitional Council, in Paris.

Economic relations

Trade between France and Haiti totalled €54.8 million in 2024, down 9.1% from €60.5 million the year before.

French exports stood at €35.8 million in 2024, down from €40.4 million the previous year. France’s exports are made up of agrifood products, clothing and mechanical, electrical, electronic and computer equipment. Despite falling 9.3%, agrifood products remain the leading export, accounting for 35% of France’s overall exports to Haiti.

Imports of Haitian products to France stood at €19 million in 2024, down 4.5% compared to the year before to €20 million. They are mainly made up of chemicals (including essential oils), which represent over 80% of France’s imports from the country, of €15.9 million, as well as agrifood products and clothing.

Following the 2010  earthquake, France’s presence in Haiti developed through reconstruction projects. Despite the deteriorating situation, a small number of French companies remain there in the sectors of energy (Rubis), media (Canal+) and services (AGS).
