Agricultural development - signature of the action plan aiming to strengthen the relationship between France and CGIAR (4 February 2021)

Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Minister of State attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, has signed the action plan aiming to strengthen the partnership between France and the international organization CGIAR, whose headquarters are located in Montpellier.

CGIAR (formerly the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, the acronym being today a brand), is a global partnership of research for development focusing on agricultural and food issues, the preservation of natural resources and the fight against poverty. It is an international organization which is headquartered in Montpellier and brings together 15 scientific centres from around the world. It works through its research programmes and platforms on sectors such as rice, corn, forest and agroforestry, on cross-cutting issues such as nutrition, climate change, policies and markets, and on technologies such as genetic improvement and big data management.

This action plan supports research for agricultural and rural development in developing countries, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on the climate. More particularly, it strengthens collaboration between France and CGIAR based on the following three themes: agriculture and climate change, agro-ecological transitions, and nutrition and sustainable food systems, through the establishment of ambitious partnership-based projects involving French research bodies (CIRAD, IRD, INRAE), CGIAR centres and institutes in developing countries. One of its first projects is the Transformative Partnership Platform (TPP), which is focused on the agroecological transition and involves many countries and institutions. It initially aims to assess socio-economic viability in Africa.

The Ministry is providing CGIAR with support of more than €12 million over three years. The Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food are also co-signatories of this plan.

The signature of this plan is a new decisive step in the bilateral relationship between France and CGIAR and strengthens this organization’s ties to Montpellier, a leading international hub for agronomic research and development.
