Statement by Jean-Yves Le Drian – Announcement of U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court (12 Jun. 2020)

France was disturbed to learn of the Executive Order issued by the United States Government on June 11 authorizing sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) personnel and individuals cooperating with it, which could affect government officials. This decision represents a serious attack on the Court and the States Parties to the Rome Statute, and beyond that, a challenge to multilateralism and judicial independence.

At the joint invitation of the Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, for the sitting Presidency of the G5 Sahel, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell Fontelles, and the French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, a ministerial meeting of the International Coalition for the Sahel was held in plenary format by videoconference on Friday, 12 June 2020.
