Tanzania – Signature of a bilateral partnership (14 May 2024)

During the official visit to Paris by Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Franco-Tanzanian partnership was strengthened bilaterally and multilaterally.

At multilateral level, the International Energy Agency hosted the Summit on Clean Cooking, co-chaired by Tanzania and Norway, in Paris today, 14 May 2024. In this context, President Macron announced that France will actively invest in development projects to support clean cooking. The use of wood and charcoal for cooking actually accounts for a very significant share of final energy consumption for many African partners and therefore of their greenhouse-gas emissions.

Bilaterally, Mr January Yusuf Makamba, Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mme Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, today signed a joint declaration to extend the Franco-Tanzanian partnership in five areas: the energy transition and the fight against climate disruption; transport infrastructure; agricultural development; investments in the blue economy; and support for gender equality.

During the visit, France also welcomed Tanzania joining the community of the Paris Pact for People and the Planet, adopted at the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact in June 2023.
