This day, 8 November 2025, marks the fifth anniversary of Myanmar’s general election whose results were overturned by the military coup of 1 February 2021.

The election to be held by the junta starting on 28 December 2025 in the parts of the country that it controls does not meet the criteria of transparency, freedom, inclusion and credibility required for its recognition.

France reiterates its call for the release of all individuals detained and sentenced for political reasons since the junta’s illegitimate assumption of power, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.

France condemns the continued violence, including airstrikes in which civilians are the main victims, and expresses its concern over the Myanmar people’s highly deteriorated humanitarian situation with its considerable regional impacts.

France restates its support for ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus to find a peaceful and lasting solution to the conflict. This Consensus calls for the de-escalation of violence and inclusive political dialogue.

France commends the mediation efforts made by the Malaysian Chair of ASEAN, ASEAN Special Envoy Othman Hashim and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, for an enduring political solution and lasting peace in Myanmar.
