M. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, hosted a meeting today with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.

The ministers took stock of the exceptional enhanced partnership between France and Morocco, nearly a year after President Macron’s state visit to Morocco on the invitation of His Majesty Mohammed VI. They discussed the many areas in which we have been able to deepen an especially fruitful bilateral relationship – particularly in terms of our industrial and strategic partnership, mobility and global challenges – and encouraged the continuation of that momentum. In this regard, the Minister welcomed Morocco’s recent membership of the group of countries with feminist foreign policies (FFP+) and Minister Bourita’s participation in the Ministerial Conference on Feminist Foreign Policies, to be held in Paris today and tomorrow.

Regarding Western Sahara, the Minister reiterated France’s unchanging position that the present and future of Western Sahara fall under the framework of Moroccan sovereignty. The autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007, which is attracting ever-broader international consensus, remains the only basis for achieving a fair, lasting, negotiated solution, in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. In this context, France is resolutely committed to a definitive political resolution of the issue at the United Nations.

The two ministers also spoke about regional and international issues of mutual interest. The Minister welcomed the prospects of strengthening the Euro-Moroccan and Euro-Mediterranean partnership in all its dimensions, for the benefit of our two continents. He reaffirmed his desire to harness Franco-Moroccan cooperation to help resolve regional and international crises, particularly in the Middle East and on the African continent.
