Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, received Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, today for a working meeting.
The minister stressed the importance France attaches to the pivotal role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - within the framework of its open and inclusive strategy - in the Indo-Pacific region; Laos occupies its rightful place within ASEAN. He thanked his interlocutor for Laos’s support for France’s candidacy for the status of development partner of ASEAN, while the French Development Agency is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its presence in Laos this year.
This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss prospects for strengthening economic cooperation. This is especially true in the aerospace and hydroelectric power sectors, in which French stakeholders contribute to a safe and sustainable development model, as for example with the Nam Theun 2 dam project, where we would like to strengthen our innovative partnership in the renewable energy sector.
