M. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, visited Rome on Sunday 24 November on the invitation of Mr Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs and his counterpart hailed the excellent momentum in the Franco-Italian relationship, just ahead of the anniversary of the Quirinal Treaty, signed on 26 November 2021. They agreed to meet again soon at a cross-border cooperation committee meeting.

The Minister congratulated Italy on its G7 presidency and on involving many international partners in its various meetings.

The two ministers recalled the need to work to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ensure the safety of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and its contingents.

As regards Ukraine, the ministers reiterated their desire to continue their support whilst stressing the importance of strengthening European defence, including through new financial instruments.

Finally, the ministers returned to the importance of ensuring the swift implementation of the Draghi report in order to trigger a “competitiveness shock” at European level. They highlighted the need for the EU’s trade policy to allow partnerships to develop whilst guaranteeing the defence of European interests, particularly in the agricultural field.
