Conversation between Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, and Hassan Rohani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran (7 January 2020)

Communiqué from the Elysée Palace, Paris

President Macron spoke by phone today, 7 January 2020, with Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

President Macron underscored France’s deep concern at the recent events in Iraq and the region, as well as France’s determination to work toward easing tensions. He called on Iran to refrain from any measure likely to exacerbate the ongoing escalation of tensions.

He reaffirmed France’s attachment to Iraq’s sovereignty and security. These must also be strengthened by the presence on its territory of the international coalition, whose sole objective is to combat Daesh.

He also called on Iran to swiftly return to full compliance with its commitments under the JCPOA.

Lastly, taking note of recent developments, President Macron called for the immediate release of our compatriots Fariba Adelkhah and Roland Marchal.

President Macron and President Rouhani agreed to remain in close contact in the coming days.
