France is today opening its embassy in Guyana. Ambassador Olivier Plançon presented his letters of credence to the President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Mr Irfaan Ali, on 27 August 2025.

This new embassy, which takes over from the French diplomatic office opened in Georgetown in September 2023, makes France the first European Union country to have such a level of diplomatic representation in the country.

In nearly 60 years of diplomatic relations, France and Guyana have built a solid bilateral relationship based on the shared desire to develop and strengthen their ties of friendship and cooperation in strategic fields like defence and the fight against climate change.

The Embassy will also be accredited with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a regional organization with which France wishes to bolster its links by more significantly anchoring the French collectivities of America within it.

It illustrates the alignment of France and Guyana on promoting an effective, ambitious multilateralism that upholds the principles and values of the United Nations Charter. In this respect, France pays tribute to Guyana’s active efforts during its mandate as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
The extension of the French diplomatic network in this strategic region, between the Amazon and the Caribbean basin, will help strengthen the political, economic and cultural ties that France aspires to have with the countries in the area.
