Chad - Death of President Déby - Statement by Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs (20 April 2021)
Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, was extremely shocked to learn of the death of Chadian President Idriss Déby Itno, announced on Tuesday 20 April 2021. He extends his heartfelt condolences to his widow, his family and the whole Chadian people. Chad has lost a friend of France and a reliable partner who worked continuously for his country’s security and the stability of the Sahel.
At this especially difficult time, France stands alongside the Chadian people. It reiterates its firm commitment to Chad’s stability and territorial integrity.
A political transition now begins, conducted by the transitional military council. It is important that, following a limited period, it should be able to establish an inclusive, civilian government in the interest of the country and the Chadian people.
