Brazil – Meeting between Catherine Colonna and her counterpart - Statement by the ministry for Europe and foreign Affairs deputy spokesperson (6 June 2023)

Today, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna met with her Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira.

The two ministers underscored the excellent state of relations between France and Brazil, which are strategic, historic partners bound by a shared border.

Catherine Colonna and Mauro Vieira discussed international solidarity and global issues, in particular, the deterioration of the environmental situation in the Amazon, and recalled the need to combat deforestation. Minister Colonna commended Brazil on hosting the COP30 climate summit in 2025. The ministers spoke about the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, which will take place in Paris from June 22-23 and which will make it possible to provide greater support to the most vulnerable countries. Minister Vieira confirmed that President Lula will be attending this summit.

Catherine Colonna and her counterpart expressed their deep commitment to respect for international law, in particular, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Minister Colonna stressed the need to work together to restore peace, with full respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The ministers also discussed the crises in the region and, in particular, the need to jointly support dialogue in Venezuela. Furthermore, they shared their concerns regarding the escalation of violence in Haiti.

Lastly, the two ministers talked about the CELAC-EU Summit of Heads of State and Government, which constitutes an important step toward reviving the partnership between these two regions.
