M. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, participated in Brussels today in the donors’ conference for reconstruction efforts in Albania, in the wake of the earthquake which struck the country on 26 November 2019.
He announced France’s contribution to reconstruction efforts in Albania, in the form of a €1 million donation and a loan of at least €60 million to rehabilitate the water and sanitation network in the city of Durrës and the surrounding region, which were most affected by the earthquake. The donation and loan will be allocated by the French Development Agency.
The Minister had a meeting with the Prime Minister of Albania, Mr Edi Rama, with whom he also signed an intergovernmental agreement on the establishment and activities of the French Development Agency, Proparco and Expertise France in Albania.
This agreement, which falls within the framework of the French strategy for the Western Balkans, signals France’s heightened commitment vis-à-vis Albania to support its economic and social development and contribute to its closer ties with Europe.
