Afghanistan – Four years after the Taliban’s return to power (15 August 2025)
Four years after the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, France reaffirms its solidarity with Afghan people and its determination to activate all the levers it has available to improve the fate of the Afghan population. The decisions taken by the Taliban over the past year demonstrate once again their flagrant disrespect for the obligations set by the United Nations Security Council in its resolution 2593 in 2021 – obligations which France will continue to call on the Taliban to honour.
France also reiterates its utmost condemnation of the serious and systematic violations against Afghan women and girls that are aimed at wiping out half of the country’s population. The ban on Afghan women entering medical education institutions which the Taliban imposed in December 2024, adding to the countless violations of women’s and girls’ rights of which the Taliban have been guilty since they took power by force, is unjustifiable and unacceptable.
France is continuing its active efforts and remains fully committed to supporting the Afghan population through practical humanitarian projects conducted by the United Nations agencies and programmes and by the NGOs present on the ground, in the fields of education, health and support for Afghan women and girls.
