On the occasion of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which will be held in Nice from June 9 to 13, 2025, the Interministerial Delegation for the Mediterranean is coordinating the Mediterranean Day at the Centre universitaire méditerranéen on June 10. Gathering high-level private and public stakeholders, this event will represent a unique opportunity to reflect on challenges related to marine conservation from a variety of perspectives and scales. These discussions will contribute to further promote practical solutions fostering concrete progress toward a sustainable and inclusive blue economy in the Mediterranean.

The Région Sud and Mediterranean local authorities will focus their discussion on biodiversity protection and coastal pollution reduction, later reaffirmed during the General Assembly of the Inter-Mediterranean Commission of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CIM-CRPM).

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will bring together regional institutions to focus on strengthening mechanisms to support innovation and the development of a sustainable blue economy. It will notably result in Spain’s official contribution announcement to the “Blue Mediterranean Partnership” financing tool, which strongly embodies a common ambition at the highest level. Indeed, this fund which is supported by the UfM, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the European Investment Bank (EIB), aims to raise €1 billion to finance sustainable blue economy projects in the region.

The Varda Group will highlight the essential role of civil society organisations in building synergies for preserving the environment in the Mediterranean. This session will conclude with the announcement of funding for the Pelagos Ecological Sanctuary by the Albert II of Monaco Foundation, therefore adding a major contribution to the protection of the Mediterranean’s unique marine biodiversity.

The vital importance of civil society organisations will besides be illustratively illustrated by the installation of a panel from the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition fresco dedicated to the Mediterranean in the core of the Mediterranean Day.

The Mediterranean Action Plan of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP) will split the day’s plenary by a presentation of the results of MAP’s actions and the remaining challenges to the protection of the Mediterranean. In addition, the Blue Plan’s MED 2050 report will present scenarios and opportunities for sustainable transitions in the Mediterranean.

Finally, three Mediterranean environment ministers will reiterate the ambition of the States for the preservation of the Mediterranean in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Barcelona Convention. This session will provide the opportunity to publicly present the conclusions of the ministerial meeting on reducing plastic pollution in the region that will take place in the Blue Zone earlier in the morning.
