Lebanon – Renewal of UNIFIL mandate (August 29, 2025)

France welcomes the UN Security Council’s unanimous adoption of Resolution 2790 on August 28 extending the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for 16 months until December 31, 2026. The resolution was sponsored by France.

UNIFIL’s contribution to Lebanon’s security and stability is invaluable. Those 16 months will make it possible for UNIFIL to continue its operations and to support the Lebanese Armed Forces as they gain strength in southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese government must be the sole guarantor of nationwide security. In the long term, that implies UNIFIL’s withdrawal so that the LAF may ensure southern Lebanon’s security. It also requires the departure of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory in accordance with UN Resolution 2790, which calls on Israel to withdraw from the five positions it occupies north of the Blue Line and asks the Lebanese government to deploy forces there with support from UNIFIL.

France pays tribute to all UNIFIL personnel, to our French contingent and to all the other contingents for their dedication and professionalism. France will continue to stand with Lebanon and its people.
