Seventeen years after the Russian aggression in Georgia, France reaffirms its full commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. France emphasizes that the unilateral recognition of the self-proclaimed authorities of the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the militarization of these regions, and obstacles to relations between them and the rest of Georgia, are unacceptable violations of international law.

France calls on Russia to fully implement the commitments it made on August 12 and September 8, 2008. France also reaffirms its support for the Geneva International Discussions (GID) co-chaired by the EU, the OSCE and the UN. These discussions alone will enable the parties to work toward a common solution.

France, along with its European partners, will continue to support the efforts of the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia and the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. We will also continue to support Georgia’s sovereignty, the democratic aspirations of its people and their desire to join the EU.
