France and Tonga

France is one of the longest-standing diplomatic partners of Tonga, with which it signed a treaty of friendship in 1855 and then a treaty of friendship and cooperation in 1980.

Our cooperation relies on the Armed Forces of New Caledonia, which maintains regular relations with Tonga’s armed forces.

The Pacific Fund also supports regional projects involving French Pacific communities in the fields of health, renewable energy and, of course, Francophonie. French is taught at Tonga High School, the country’s most prominent school, with the support of the French Embassy in Suva and New Caledonia’s Government. The Total Group and the Pacific Petroleum Company (French Polynesia) have distribution activities in Tonga, having taken over local activities of BP and Shell.
