Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 awarded to Michel Devoret and Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2025 awarded to Philippe Aghion (December 10, 2025)
The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs applauds today’s awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 to Michel H. Devoret from France, along with John Clarke from the UK, and John M. Martinis from the U.S., in recognition of their pioneering work together on macroscopic quantum mechanics. The Ministry likewise applauds the awarding of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2025 to Philippe Aghion from France, along with Joel Mokyr from Israel and the U.S., and Peter Howitt from Canada.
France welcomes the decision to award two of our fellow citizens these prizes, which highlight their high-level international careers and scientific collaboration, and which recognize, once again, France’s excellence in science and reputation in the field.
This year, in line with its commitment to academic freedom, researcher mobility, and excellence in research, France launched Choose France for Science, a new program that will host international researchers working in cutting-edge fields. France is a staunch supporter of research and innovation, which are essential to developing industrial competitiveness and the technologies of the future that will contribute to the digital and ecological transition. The French government will continue to pursue and strengthen its policies, especially in the field of new technologies.
