This December 10th, on the occasion of Human Rights Day, France reaffirms its commitment to protecting and promoting these rights, as they are stated in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration enshrines the universal, indivisible, inalienable nature of human rights, whose realization depends on justice and respect for the rule of law.

France pays tribute to the defenders of human rights, who, out of their commitment to this cause, have chosen to take a stand against obscurantism in order to defend human dignity, the rule of law and democracy. In addition, France expresses its concern for the defenders of rights across the world in light of the increasing criminalization from which they suffer.

That is why, on the occasion of Human Rights Day, France is awarding the “Liberté-Égalité-Fraternité” Human Rights Prize 2025 of the French Republic, in addition to the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law, to men and women who lead this fight on different continents day after day.

Every year, the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and the Rule of Law, a Franco-German initiative launched in 2016, is awarded to individuals known for their exemplary commitment to protecting and promoting human rights in their country.
