“The number one challenge for an ambitious francophone policy is that of transmission. Before a language is spoken, it needs to be learned. It must also enable those who are learning to acquire basic knowledge and to build their freedom. Schools and universities play a crucial role in this regard. They are the most important places where France’s international francophone policy plays out”.
President Emmanuel Macron, International Policy for the French Language and Multilingualism
The Cooperation and Cultural Action Services and the network of Instituts Français and Alliances Françaises
The cooperation and cultural action services in coordination with French language schools implement embassies’ cooperation policy in the field of education. The aim is to increase the presence of the French language and expertise in local education systems.

Language assistants in France and abroad
Every year, some 6,500 young participants in the language assistant exchange programme run by International Centre for Educational Studies (CIEP) spend an academic year abroad, in a network of 60 partner countries, assisting language teachers and sharing their culture with students.
Foreign language assistants from some 50 countries come to France to provide support in foreign language courses given in the French education system, while French assistants abroad provide support in French language courses in foreign education systems.
