UN – Appointment by the UN Secretary-General of new Special Representatives and Mission Heads in South Sudan, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (21 January 2021)
France welcomes the UN Secretary-General’s appointment of new special representatives and mission heads.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, France congratulates Bintou Keita and assures her of our full support for her new mission at the head of MONUSCO. France pays tribute to the work carried out over the past three years by her predecessor, Leila Zerrougui. France encourages MONUSCO to pursue the changes initiated in 2019 and confirmed by the Security Council in 2020, refocusing its efforts on stabilizing the eastern part of the country and implementing the transition plan agreed to by the Congolese authorities. On this occasion, it reiterates its support for the reforms implemented by Félix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In Sudan, France welcomes the appointment of Volker Perthes as Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the new United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS). France reaffirms its commitment to the democratic transition in Sudan and urges the swift deployment of UNITAMS so that it can support the efforts of the Sudanese transitional authorities.
In South Sudan, France congratulates Nicholas Haysom on his appointment and applauds the work carried out by David Shearer as Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in South Sudan and head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) since 2017. France reiterates its support for UNMISS’s efforts and the services rendered by the Special Representative in support of the full implementation of the provisions of the peace agreement in South Sudan.
