European Union – 25th anniversary of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union (7 december 2025)
On 7 December 2000, alongside the other European Union Member States, France adopted the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Through its 54 articles, this key text establishes a common basis of principles and values that guarantee protection for the essential rights of all European Union citizens.
Twenty-five years after its proclamation, the Charter has established itself as a crucial pillar of our Union’s legal system and a guarantee of high standards for the protection of European citizens’ rights. Today it provides a coherent, ambitious framework in support of dignity, freedom, equality, solidarity, citizenship and justice. France remains fully committed to promoting this fundamental instrument and seeks to ensure that the rights and principles enshrined in the Charter are protected and observed.
