SDG 6. Clean water and sanitation
Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Presentation - State of affairs
While access to water has become a reality for more than 2.6 billion more people, 663 million people still have no access and more than a third of humankind still has no sanitation. The Millennium Development Goals aimed to reduce by half the number of people without access to water and sanitation.
SDG 6 goes further than this and aims for universal and equitable access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation by 2030, particularly for vulnerable populations. However, the goal also aims for this resource to be sustainably managed, in terms of water quality, sustainable and efficient use and ecosystem protection, and mentions the reduction of the number of people suffering from water scarcity. This goal incorporates the notion of transboundary management, which is required for sustainable management and fosters peace and cooperation.
