Sargassum Crisis: Regional Cooperation and Response Towards New Opportunities (Nice, June 10 2025)
On the occasion of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice from June 9 to 13, 2025, France, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic support the organization of a side event entitled: “Sargassum Crisis: Regional Cooperation and Response Towards New Opportunities”.
With the growing influxes of sargassum seaweed impacting coastal ecosystems, the economy, and health in many territories, this side event aims to raise international awareness and support coordinated action. UNOC3 provides a key opportunity for mobilization in the face of this regional and global challenge.
On this occasion, all States affected by massive sargassum influxes, neighboring countries and international partners are invited to join the International Action Plan for the Management of Sargassum Floods, presented by France (notably the Guadeloupe Region), Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and developed in consultation with a wide range of States and regional organizations. This plan outlines a shared framework for action and identifies key phases of response to the crisis.
