After three weeks of negotiations, the International Seabed Authority (ISA) concluded the 30th session of its Assembly and Council in Kingston, Jamaica.

As it did at the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France called on other nations to join the coalition to adopt, at the very least, a precautionary pause on deep-sea mining. Croatia agreed to join the coalition, thereby becoming the 38th nation to support a precautionary pause or moratorium.

France once again strongly condemned any unilateral attempt to appropriate mining resources from deep-sea beds outside of the ISA framework, contrary to international law.

During the ISA Council’s negotiations on a draft mining code, France stressed the importance of adopting robust regulations that protect the environment and guarantee procedures that are fair and transparent for all countries.
