Uruguay – Death of José “Pepe” Mujica (15 May 2025)

France was saddened to learn of the death of former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica.

An important figure in Uruguayan and Latin American political history, José Mujica maintained a lifelong commitment to the ideals of integrity, democracy and justice, and stood out for his societal reforms, including marriage for all and the legalization of abortion.
France offers its heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and to the government and people of’ Uruguay.
