Uganda - LGBT+ Rights (5 April 2024)

France is extremely concerned by the Ugandan Constitutional Court’s decision to uphold the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act. It did, however, declare certain provisions unconstitutional. This law violates international human rights law and Uganda’s international commitments. The debate around this law and its adoption by the Parliament have fostered a climate of anti- LGBT+ violence and discrimination. France especially deplores the decision to uphold the death penalty, which we oppose in all circumstances.

France expresses its solidarity with the LGBT+ community and all those whose lives are endangered by this law. We stand by them so that all Ugandan citizens, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity, may be protected and treated with equality, dignity, and respect.
