Q : Does the Quai d’Orsay have any comment on the sentences handed down in the “conspiracy against state security” case in Tunisia?

R : We were troubled to learn of the heavy sentences handed down by a Lower Court following the April 18th hearing against a number of people accused of “conspiring against state security.” Several of them are French citizens. We regret that they were not afforded a fair trial.

Several French and European diplomats, joined by diplomats from friendly countries, went to the Tunis court for the three hearings to show how closely we are following this case, while respecting Tunisian sovereignty. But diplomats and reporters were barred from attending the April 18th hearing.

France is committed to the right to a fair trial, an independent judiciary and freedom of association, speech and assembly in Tunisia and worldwide. Throughout the world, it is the rule of law that guarantees the development of a stable and prosperous democracy.
