France welcomes today’s signing in Khartoum of a framework agreement between the military and much of the civilian opposition to end the serious political crisis in which Sudan has been embroiled since 2021. France also commends the dedication of the UN Integrated Sudanese Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), which helped give rise to this agreement, with support from international partners.

This framework agreement represents a major step toward restoring Sudan’s democratic transition, which has been suspended for more than a year. The signature of this agreement must now be followed by the prompt appointment of a civilian government.

France repeats that it stands ready to help the Sudanese reach a final political agreement that formalizes the revival of the democratic transition begun in 2019 and defines a clear electoral timetable. We reaffirm our commitment to the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people. We are prepared to fully resume our cooperation with the Sudanese authorities once a civilian government has been put in place.
