Russia – Authorities crack down on the opposition (6 december 2022)

We lament the Russian prosecutor’s decision yesterday to request a nine-year prison sentence for the opposition councilman Ilya Yashin, following his June 28th arrest amidst charges of disseminating “false information” on the Russian army’s operations in Ukraine, with “incitement to hatred.”

France is very concerned by the Russian authorities’ campaign of repression against critics of those in power and their war of aggression against Ukraine. France condemns the barriers to freedom of expression and freedom of the press, which have grown in number over the past several months.

We call on the Russian authorities to respect human rights and fundamental liberties, to release all political prisoners, and to drop the charges against them.
