Israel/Palestinian Territories – Serious incident in Jenin (22 May 2025)
The Israeli army’s firing of automatic weapons during a diplomatic delegation’s visit to Jenin on May 21 was unjustifiable and unacceptable.
The Israeli army had full knowledge of this visit, which included a French diplomat as well as diplomats from a number of other countries.
This serious incident is the latest in a series of incidents in which Israeli actions have hampered the smooth progression of activities by diplomatic officials. This time, the physical safety of employees of France’s Consulate General in Jerusalem and other diplomatic missions was directly endangered. This is unacceptable.
The safety of diplomatic and consular employees is and must remain a fundamental principle of international law.
The Israeli ambassador in Paris will be summoned to the Quai d’Orsay this afternoon to provide an explanation for this extremely serious incident.
