France utterly condemns the public execution of an Iranian who was sentenced to death following his participation in the protests currently under way in Iran. This execution, the second in less than a week, comes in addition to the many other serious, unacceptable violations of fundamental rights and freedoms committed by the Iranian authorities.

France reiterates its unwavering opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances. We remain resolutely committed to the universal abolition of this unjust, inhumane punishment.

At today’s Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs condemned Iran’s policy of brutal repression and attacks on fundamental liberties. She announced the adoption of new EU sanctions, specifically against the architects of the crackdown in Iran, for whom there must be no impunity. Demonstrators must not be executed in response to the current protests in Iran. France calls on the Iranian authorities to halt these executions and to listen to the legitimate aspirations of the Iranian people.
