Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke today by phone with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

The minister underscored the urgent need to immediately resume the negotiations suspended by Iran in June in order to allow the return to full compliance with the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal. The minister expressed our concern regarding all of the nuclear activities being carried out by Iran in violation of this agreement.

The minister expressed the hope that the dialogue between France and Iran could contribute to the resumption and conclusion of these negotiations on the nuclear issue, as well as to the strengthening of regional stability and security in the Middle East, as a follow-up to the regional conference on cooperation and partnership hosted by Iraq, in cooperation with France, in which Iran participated on August 28.

The minister also discussed the current crisis in Afghanistan. He reiterated all of our expectations regarding the Taliban as expressed in resolution 2593 adopted on August 30 by the UN Security Council, and underscored in this context the need to ensure the safe and unimpeded departure of foreign nationals and Afghans who would like to leave the country.
