On the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, on 22 January 2019, President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel, signed in Aachen, a new Franco-German treaty on cooperation and integration.
Exactly one year after it was signed, the Treaty of Aachen entered into force on Wednesday, 22 January 2020. Upon completion of the national ratification procedures, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Germany’s Ambassador to France, deposited the German ratification instrument with François Delattre, Secretary-General of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
