France offers its full support for the UN Secretary-General’s decision to host an informal 5+1 meeting in Geneva on April 27-29 to create the necessary conditions for resuming formal negotiations to resolve the Cyprus issue. It encourages the stakeholders to grasp this opportunity with both hands and to show the political will and spirit of compromise that are essential for success.

A just and lasting solution on Cyprus cannot result in the island’s definitive partition. We reaffirm our commitment to the framework endorsed by the UN Security Council based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation offering both communities full guarantees of political equality. The future of Cyprus must be that of a stable, prosperous reunited island within the European Union, in the interest of all Cypriots and regional stability.
