France in the south-west Indian Ocean

With more than a million French citizens living in the overseas departments and regions of Réunion and Mayotte, France’s presence in the south-west region of the Indian Ocean is human but also historical, territorial (land and sea), cultural (Francophonie), economic, environmental (actions to preserve biodiversity and administration of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, cooperation with States in the region on the blue economy) and military (securing maritime routes, with the permanent presence of armed forces in the southern region of the Indian Ocean – FASZOI).

For more than thirty years, France has been a member of the Indian Ocean Commission, alongside Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Réunion and Mayotte have extensive economic, business and human ties with the countries in the sub-region.
