Kiribati Islands

Political relations

Our relations with the Republic of Kiribati are gradually growing.

A maritime demarcation agreement with French Polynesia was signed at Tarawa, on December 18th, 2002.

Through the Pacific Fund, France has financed cooperation projects in education, biodiversity (Tarawa lagoon), and water and mineral resources (Banaba Island).

The Vice-President of Kiribati, Mrs. Teima Onorio participated in the Third France-Oceania Summit, on July 31st, 2009 in Noumea.

President Anote Tong attended the 5th Global Conference on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands, co-hosted by France and UNESCO, from May 3rd to 7th, 2010 in Paris.

Our Ambassador in Suva is accredited to the Republic of Kiribati.

  • Summit of the Association of Caribbean States (28-30.04.14)

    The 6th Summit of the Association of Caribbean States took place from April 28 to 30 in Mérida, Mexico. It marked the 20th anniversary of this regional organization of which France has been an associate member since it was established in 1994.

  • Presidency of the African Union in 2014 (30.01.14)

    France warmly congratulates Mauritanian President, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, on his election as chairman of the African Union in 2014. It expresses its full trust in the new chairman and wishes him every success in carrying out his mandate.
