Dialogue between France and the Republic of Austria has traditionally been close and of high quality, favored by the long-standing tradition of speaking French among Austrian elites and the Austrian State Treaty of 1955.
This in-depth dialogue intensified in 2006, in particular thanks to the Austrian Presidency of the EU. Regular consultation is conducted on European issues, on which the two countries most often have very close positions.
Chancellor Gusenbauer made a working visit to Paris on November 14th and 15th, 2007: he was received by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister.
Austria provided clear support for the French presidency of the European Union during a visit to Vienna by the President of the Republic on May 30th, 2008, where he was received by President Fischer and Chancellor Gusenbauer.
Chancellor Faymann subsequently made a working visit to Paris on March 4th, 2009 during which he was received by the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister.
The Austro-French Center (CFA) is an important vector for bilateral dialogue
The Austro-French Center for Reconciliation in Europe is an intergovernmental organization created in 1978 at the initiative of B. Kreisky and J. Chirac to promote contacts between Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc.
After the fall of the Iron Curtain, France and Austria have worked to contribute, jointly, by mobilizing their political and economic expertise in the CFA, to preparing the accession of Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) to the European Union.
On November 27th-28th, 2008 the Center celebrated its 30th anniversary in Paris with an event dedicated to the future of European policies. Based in Vienna, it is funded equally by the two governments. The IFRI - whose Managing Director is the current president of the Center - is associated with its work.
