I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Denis Pietton on Monday, December 7, just months after taking up his duties as president of the Institut Français.
The Quai d’Orsay has lost one of its great diplomats, whose talents I appreciated when he became my chief of staff in May 2012. A great scholar of the Near and Middle East, his career took him to the United States, Jerusalem, South Africa, Lebanon, and Brazil.
A man of conviction and commitment, Denis Pietton was also a colleague whom all loved for his humanity and kindness. I join his loved ones, his colleagues at the Institut Français, and his countless friends in France and abroad in mourning his loss.
