The Foreign Ministry on Social Networks

As a trail-blazing French institution in the use of social media, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been very active on the social web since 2009. This initiative stems from the desire to reach out to Internet users so as to better publicize the Ministry’s work and the issues addressed by French diplomacy.

Social media

You can join us now on:

Twitter

The Ministry’s account, @francediplo, was the first French ministerial account to be created. The micro-blogging site is mostly used to spread news, information for the general public and practical information including topical issues for expatriates and advice for travellers. Twitter is also an invaluable communication tool in times of crisis.

The @francediplo account is also available in English at @francediplo_EN, in Spanish at @francediplo_ES, in Arabic at @francediplo_AR, in German at @francediplo_DE, and in Russian at @francediplo_RU.

For each of these accounts, specific communication is used, tailored to the audiences and issues of the linguistic area.

Conseils aux Voyageurs (Travellers’ advice) for each country can be seen on our dedicated Twitter account @ConseilsVoyages.

Facebook

As a forum for exchanges with Internet users, the Ministry’s Facebook page highlights the main international news stories, practical information for French nationals, and some of the Ministry’s lesser known activities, notably in the field of cooperation.

The Ministry is also available to English-speakers via its Facebook page in English and Arab-speakers via its Facebook page in Arabic.

Instagram

The photo- and video-sharing site Instagram has over 500 million worldwide. On this account, the Ministry aims to increase the diversity of its network by each week displaying a photo taken by our embassies and consulates throughout the world. This account is also another step in the Ministry’s efforts to increase its social media presence as part of the “MAEDI 21” modernization programme.

Youtube

With reports, behind-the-scenes stories and interviews, our YouTube channel features videos produced by our service in Paris and by French embassies and consulates around the world.

Flickr

Flickr is a photo sharing site that allows optimized use of the Ministry’s photo collection. Classified in thematic albums, these photos illustrate the reality of diplomacy on the ground.

Linkedin

The Ministry presents its human resources policy and professions on this professional social network. The LinkedIn network is also used to identify specialist skills profiles required for some of the Ministry’s non-permanent missions.

Mobile apps

With the number of French mobile users steadily increasing, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is constantly seeking to offer services for mobile devices and has thus designed a Conseils aux voyageurs travel advice app for smartphones and tablets.
