Political relations

France’s relationship with Liberia was warm and relaxed under President George M. Weah, a French-speaker and Francophile, and continued under President Boakai. He was received on an official visit to Paris in October 2025.

Economic relations

Libera ranks as France’s 196th-largest customer. In 2024, our sales were affected by a freeze in refined petroleum products and coke, which had seen strong growth in 2023, accounting for 66% of sales. In 2024, agricultural products and equipment dominated our exports to Liberia, respectively accounting for 33% and 35% of trade.

Liberia is France’s largest sub-Saharan supplier of iron ore. This ore, extracted by ArcelorMittal in Nimba County, is exported via the railway linking the mine to the port of Buchanan. France’s imports from Liberia are almost exclusively natural hydrocarbons and other extractive industry products (99% of our purchases, up 23.5% to €181 million).

France’s economic presence remains limited. French companies, however, are active in the rubber and palm oil sectors, as well as in mining.
