Exchanges are facilitated by the geographical proximity with French territories in the Americas and by shared interests in the areas of maritime safety, the fight against illegal trafficking, the management of natural hazards and environmental protection. France notably provided humanitarian support to the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian in 2019, which severely impacted the archipelago. In the Central and South America region, the Bahamas is France’s 18th-biggest customer (2018). Economic relations between France and the Bahamas are marked by the presence of several leading French companies in key sectors of the Bahamian economy. The Rubis group, specialized in the storage and distribution of petroleum products, has been established in the Bahamas for many years. In 2011, it took over US company Chevron’s network of service stations and aviation fuel business. The Soletanche Bachy group entered into a partnership with the main local construction company and the Mosko Group is active in the construction field. The Bouygues group recently completed the construction of a tourism complex and luxury housing. Club Med is also present on the islands.
