UN – Adoption of sanctions on individuals involved in human trafficking and migrant trafficking in Libya (8 June 2018)

At the initiative of France, and as Jean-Yves Le Drian had pledged, the UN Security Council has adopted individual sanctions against people involved in human trafficking and migrant trafficking in Libya.

We applaud the adoption of these sanctions, which meet President Macron’s goal of improving the international response to the migration crisis in cooperation with our partners in the UN, the EU and the African Union, following meetings between heads of state and government held in Paris in August 2017 and in November 2017 in Abidjan.

This unanimous Security Council decision reflects the international community’s determination to combat this despicable trafficking, which destroys human lives, fuels a criminal economy, and threatens the stability of Libya, its neighbors, and the Euro-Mediterranean region. There can be no impunity for these crimes.

A sustainable, credible response to the migration crisis in Libya will only be possible as part of an inclusive political solution that respects the commitments taken by the four main Libyan protagonists on May 29 in Paris, allowing for the holding of elections and the unification of all the country’s armed forces under a single civilian authority.
